The Regional Council of Agricultural Machinery Associations (ReCAMA)聽was established by the Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization (CSAM) of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in 2014. ReCAMA aims to promote sustainable agricultural mechanization in Asia and the Pacific through strengthening the capacity of national agricultural machinery associations, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and information, and enhancing collaboration and closer business connections among national associations and their members. ReCAMA is an important initiative for scaling-up the availability, adoption and sustainable use of agricultural machinery at the regional level through a demand-driven model closely involving the private sector.

To facilitate information sharing and regional trade among the members, a ReCAMA Regional Directory of Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers and Distributors was compiled and published in June 2021. Due to the positive feedback received for the 2021 Regional Directory, as well as the urgency in addressing the issue of straw burning and improving agricultural ecosystems, this ReCAMA Regional Sub-Directory of Conservation Agriculture and Straw Management Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers was prepared following the decision of the ReCAMA Member Meeting in 2022.

This Regional Sub-directory is a compilation of information collected by the Agricultural Machinery Manufacturer Associations of Bangladesh (AMMAB); the China Agricultural Machinery Distribution Association (CAMDA); the India Agricultural Machinery Manufactures' Association (AMMA); and the Turkish Association of Agricultural Machinery & Equipment Manufacturers.

The team at CSAM working on the consolidation of the information included Yuee Feng, Zishuai Yu, and Yidan Xu. Special thanks go to Zishuai Yu for his work on the layout and design.

The Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization (CSAM) is a regional institution of the聽United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific聽(ESCAP). The need聽for a market study was voiced during the 4th Member Meeting of the CSAM-led initiative titled聽Regional Council of Agricultural Machinery聽Associations in Asia and the Pacific (ReCAMA),聽wherein the network members expressed a need to better understand the dynamics of individual聽country markets,聽levels of penetration of mechanization; gaps in mechanization for specific聽applications; opportunities for growth, and sustainability and gender related issues. In聽response,聽this study was carried out to analyze the market status in respect of agricultural machinery聽in China, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Nominees of the聽respective agricultural machinery聽associations in these countries carried out the study as part of the research team under the聽guidance of the lead consultant.

The study was conducted under the overall guidance of Dr. Li Yutong, Head of CSAM聽and Mr. Anshuman Varma, Deputy Head/Programme Officer of CSAM. The聽efforts of Mr.聽Lasantha Wickremesooriya, the lead consultant of the research team and President of Sri Lanka聽Agriculture Machinery Manufacturers and Suppliers聽Association, are duly acknowledged for聽providing overall guidance for this study and leading the research team comprising of Mr.聽Ru Yi of China Agricultural聽Machinery Distribution Association (CAMDA), Dr. Surendra聽Singh of the Agricultural Machinery Manufactures' Association of India (AMMA-India), and聽Ms. Dares聽Kittiyopas of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives of Thailand (MOAC)聽who contributed their wealth of knowledge, experience, and competencies to produce a聽comprehensive study.

Mr. Ma Zheng from CAMDA, Mr. Amjad Rajap, Ms. Milinda Fernando, Mr. Nishantha聽Ekanayake, Mr. Vajira Priyankara, numerous field officers from the Department of Agriculture聽from Sri Lanka. Mr. Jiraphat Dean Kittiyopas from Thai Society of Agricultural Engineering聽all contributed substantially to this study. Agriculture continues to be the single largest employer in the world, despite us witnessing the transition of many economies from manufacturing to services, a聽phenomenon even more evident in the Asian context. 鈥榋ero Hunger鈥, one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations General聽Assembly in 2015, aims to 鈥淓nd hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture鈥. Sustainable mechanization of agriculture is聽an important means towards this Goal. Our efforts聽and abilities to provide farmers access to powered machinery, tools and implements can transform the traditional聽subsistence model of farming to a more sustainable, market-driven and entrepreneurial form of agriculture, which can be attractive to the present-day generation.聽Sustainable mechanization in agriculture provides several economic benefits, inter-alia, productivity and production enhancement and soil enrichment.
